How to Choose the Right Paint Finish for Your Home
A room-by-room guide to choosing matte, satin, silk and gloss finishes based on traffic, cleaning and surface condition.
Choosing a colour is only half the decision. The paint finish controls how much light a wall reflects, how easily it can be cleaned and how clearly it shows surface defects.
Start with the way the room is used
A quiet adult bedroom has different demands from a busy corridor or children's room. Lower-sheen finishes feel calm and can disguise small wall imperfections, while higher-sheen finishes are usually easier to wipe.
Matte and flat finishes
Matte finishes reflect little light. They suit ceilings, low-traffic bedrooms and walls where a soft appearance matters. Because repeated scrubbing can mark some matte paints, confirm the product's washability before using it in a busy family space.
Silk, eggshell and satin finishes
These sit between matte and gloss. They give a gentle sheen and are practical for living rooms, passages and other areas that need occasional cleaning. Product names vary by manufacturer, so compare the technical description rather than relying only on the label.
Gloss and semi-gloss finishes
Gloss is useful on doors, frames, skirting and selected high-contact surfaces. It can highlight uneven preparation, which is why filling, sanding and priming matter before application.
Match the finish to the surface
A sound, smooth wall offers more options than a damp, cracked or powdery wall. Fix moisture and adhesion problems first. Paint should be the final layer in a system, not a cover for an unresolved defect.
A practical room-by-room approach
Use a suitable ceiling paint overhead, a washable low- or mid-sheen finish in active rooms, and durable trim paint where hands, shoes or cleaning tools make regular contact. Test a small area in daytime and evening light before approving the final choice.
If you are unsure, share photographs of the space and explain how each room is used. A useful recommendation should consider the wall condition, lighting, cleaning needs and preferred look together.
